What is ginseng?

Ginseng (Panax ginseng C. A. Mey), a perennial herb of the Araliaceae family, is called "ginseng" because its roots are hypertrophic and often forked, and its overall appearance is similar to the head, hands, feet and limbs of humans. The roots and rhizomes are used as medicine. The name of the plant genus Panax means "universal therapy" in Greek. It is also known as yellow ginseng, goblin, god grass, and the king of herbs. It is called Korean ginseng, Asian ginseng and Chinese ginseng in foreign countries. It is a traditional Chinese One of the important components of Chinese herbal medicines. Because the leaves of ginseng have no stomata and palisade tissue, they cannot retain water, and the leaves will be burned when the temperature is higher than 32 °C. Therefore, ginseng is mainly produced in Northeast China, North Korea, South Korea, Japan and eastern Russia. Usually 3 years to bloom, 5-6 years to bear fruit, 5-6 years to harvest ginseng roots.

The chemical composition of ginseng is relatively complex, and it is rich in active substances, including ginsenosides, volatile oils, ginseng polysaccharides, flavonoids, fatty acids, vitamins, proteins, sterols, lignin, inorganic elements and trace elements. The iconic ingredient in ginseng is ginsenoside, and its content is about 4%. Ginseng extract refers to a powdered product with ginsenoside as an active ingredient index obtained after a series of processes such as pretreatment, extraction, concentration, refining, drying, pulverization, and sieving of ginseng roots.
